Many couples begin therapy feeling distant, frustrated, or alone in their relationship. You may feel angry, hurt, unheard, or unwanted. Couples counseling offers a space to uncover and share these emotions while exploring the patterns and challenges that have created disconnection.
In our work together, I help each of you gain insight into your role in the relationship dynamic—both your struggles and your strengths. Instead of focusing solely on what your partner is doing wrong, we’ll shift attention toward what you can do to foster connection and healing. This approach often feels empowering and opens the door to meaningful change.
Common Reasons Couples Seek Therapy
Do any of these feel familiar in your relationship?
- Minimal physical or sexual intimacy
- Lack of quality time together
- Recurring arguments with no resolution
- Difficulty communicating about finances, parenting, or other life decisions
- Struggles over household responsibilities
- Conflicts around step-parenting roles
- Tension involving parents or in-laws
- Betrayal or infidelity
Creating Change
We begin by identifying the challenges in your relationship and learning how to communicate them in ways that are heard and understood. Together, we’ll explore the unhelpful patterns—such as the common “pursuer/distancer” dynamic—where one partner seeks closeness and the other pulls away.
These cycles can be painful and confusing. But with new awareness and tools, couples can interrupt these patterns and develop healthier, more supportive ways of relating. The ultimate goal is to strengthen your emotional connection, deepen understanding of each other’s needs, and build a resilient bond that can weather future challenges.
Specialized Training in Couples Work
My post-graduate training has included a strong focus on couples therapy. I completed a year-long program at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, dedicated entirely to the study of couple dynamics. Additionally, I completed a two-year advanced training program at the Washington School of Psychiatry, where I studied both individual and couples therapy. This extensive training has deeply informed and enriched my work with couples.
